Medicine of Metabolic Diseases published an article that looks at the correlation between gut microbiota, management of type 2 diabetes, and related developments. In the study conducted on obese and diabetic mice treated or untreated with pre-biotics and a control diet, more than 100 taxa of bacteria were found including a new genus of Akkermansia muciniphila near intestinal mucosa.

In the animal model, A. muciniphila was found in abundant numbers and was inversely correlated to body weight, adiposity, blood glucose, and intestinal permeability. After administration of mice with A. muciniphilaon a high-fat diet increased mucus layer, restoration of junction proteins, antimicrobial peptides, bioactive lipids along with a visible decrease in obesity, inflammatory parameters, insulin resistance, etc. It was observed that after pasteurization, the effects of the bacterium were enhanced. Further data from the literature shows that A. muciniphilais reduced in the gut of people who are overweight, prediabetic, diabetic, or diagnosed with IBS.

In September 2021, European Medicines Agency approved the administration of pasteurized A. muciniphilaas a novel food ingredient for human administration in the form of dietary supplements.
